Celebrities' Influence in Mid and Post Modern Times
Introduction
Celebrities' influence in modern culture as well as their wealth have influenced which artist become popular due to celebrities' wanting to collect art from them. I will be going over three artists that celebrities collect art from in our modern times.
Lawrence Harris
Lawrence Harris is an American painter who was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1937. He has studied art in both the United States and Europe. Harris is known for both impressionistic paintings and abstract compositions. The paintings above are inspired by Canadas nature and environment and inspired Steve Martin to co-curate an exhibition called "The Idea of North". These paintings colors, line work and illusion of light give that exact title in my opinion. These paintings give the feeling of northenr cold weather and nature with the blues and greys symbolizing the cold with beaming light from the sun still shining through.

Andreas Gursky is a German artist known for his digitally manipulated images. Similar in scope to early 19th-century landscape paintings. Leonardo Dicaprio became an avid art collector and chose Gurskys Ocean V to be in his auction. Gurskys work also involves digital manipulation having the photographs seem and feel as big as they are.

Sarah, good work! I like the way this blog was presented, you went over the artists and each work, while keeping it concise. I think that the influence celebrities have can extend to just about everything when you really get to thinking about it, something I find to be deeply unsettling. However, every now and then celebrities will use their power and reach to do something good, or shed light upon new people like mentioned in your blog. The impact that was had on the lives of these artist, probably changed dramatically after receiving. endorsements/recommendations/etc... I enjoyed learning about each piece as I like them, especially the work of Lawrence Harris.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I really like how you chose to look at the effect of celebrities on the art world, spending immense amounts of money on art and elevating artist's careers just through name association alone.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post Sarah! I specifically really enjoyed the exhibition The Idea of North co-curated by Lawrence Harris. I got a warm and happy feeling when examining these two pieces and I can see why a celebrity would want to own these! What most drew me in in both pieces was the illustration of light and the way it is carried through the whole piece. Thanks for sharing.
